Quarantine didn’t stop these Aussies from creating a fun and colorful video for fans

Aussie blokes, 5 Seconds Of Summer, unveiled a trippy, colorful new video for their latest single “Wildflower” off of their fourth studio album CALM. The band had to cancel their plans for the original video shoot due to California’s shelter in place order, but the guys did not let that ruin their plans to make an incredibly imaginative and fun visual for fans. Andy DeLuca, a constant collaborator for 5SOS, remotely directed this video alongside co-director Sarah Eisman. “Wildflower” was shot using a green screen that was sent around — sanitized before and after each use of course — to each of the members who had to film their own takes. Although the band is quarantined separately, the results of the video remind viewers of the undeniable bond between best friends, even when apart from each other during this challenging time. The silly energy of the guys was heightened with CGI imagery of puppies, flowers, crowds, and kaleidoscopic color schemes. The lo-fi psychedelic effects and playful animations are thanks to DeLuca and Eisman who learned to create them specifically for this video — an incredible job.

Bassist Calum Hood comments on the track: “’Wildflower’ was the wildcard of the album. A song that has opened new avenues for this band to explore. Most importantly it just feels good to listen to and disconnect for a minute. We really feel this video reflects that too and hope you all enjoy!”

The Calum Hood vocally dominated song is catchy and colorful, to begin with, and the band, DeLuca, and Eisman did a phenomenal job creating this video as a last-minute project. The video looks like something out of the 70s, with images of flowers, tye-dye colors, and the bright colors surrounding the guys as they do whatever that band does in their fun videos. Although 5SOS were not together when shooting this video, there are edited scenes of the band together playing their instruments as if they were in the same room. 5 Seconds Of Summer never fail to disappoint their fans when it comes to music videos for their fan favorites, and “Wildflower” is a prime example of that. Can’t wait to see what else these Aussies have in store.

Director Andy DeLuca explains the behind-the-scenes making of the video by adding: “Our original plan for the ‘Wildflower’ music video consisted of a big budget, a full crew, and a giant studio. But it was canceled due to coronavirus and we were forced to make something under the challenging conditions of quarantine. Michael had a green screen sitting in his closet, so I figured that could be enough to make something. Since the song has a pretty distinct 80s/90s tone, I came up with the idea of making an 80’s/90’s MTV-style music video. A ‘music-video-themed music video’. The stuff I grew up on and loved. So we passed around the disinfected green screen [with the help of our teammate Kat Gallagher], and everyone filmed their parts at home with an iPhone and later sent the footage over to me. In the meantime, Sarah Eiseman and I began working on the art for the video. We quickly learned animation and drew up several blooming flowers, and also created the trippy-colored backgrounds using milk and food dye. I then spent the next couple of days/nights editing nonstop until my eyes bled and the video was completed. It definitely has pushed us to create something  we normally wouldn’t, using only our brains and our hands.”
