Indie-pop artist on the rise, Alexander 23, shared the official video for his lovesick single “Caught In The Middle.” From the mind of Kee Hwang [Miguel, Camila Cabello, Tainy] the music video sports the backdrop of a hip LA bar – aimed to encapsulate the nostalgic era of the early 2000s. “Caught In The Middle” sounds as if it is happy and upbeat, but the thoughtful lyrics run subtly alongside the happy-go-lucky music. The lyrics focus on the uncomfortable feeling of familiarity of what was once a significant relationship.
As this song delivers nostalgia to the older, 90s/early 2000s kids, it is intoxicatingly desolate. “We’re caught in the middle of lovers and strangers,” Alexander sings over a guitar-led melody. “You know everything about me except how my day was.”
The official music video for “Caught In The Middle” encaptures a disorienting situation – the very real emotions felt after a breakup. The familiarity and feeling of being lost butting heads as you come out of the break up a new person with a broken heart – free to work on yourself while trying to mend the broken pieces of yourself.
Mannequins are used throughout the video, and they seem to portray the vision of being physically present, but not mentally available. Alexander engages in a solo karaoke rendition of the track, surrounded by party decorations as the mannequins enjoy themselves, motionless in their predetermined bodily positions around the pool tables. The feeling of loneliness radiates throughout the video – being around a lot of people all night, yet still feeling so alone due to the fact the person you were once so involved with has up and left your life. Alexander makes friends with the plastic beings by playing billiards, singing, dancing, and drinking with them to give the illusion he is okay when in reality he feels the total opposite.
“Caught In The Middle” follows the release of his biggest hit to date “IDK You Yet,” which caught copious amounts of attention on the world-famous app TikTok, landing a spot in the top 10 of Rolling Stones’ Breakthrough 25. The track has garnered over 113 million streams on Spotify worldwide and 44 million in the U.S. alone. The Chicago-native will make his late-night T.V. debut on the Late Late Show with James Corden on August 11th with a performance of “IDK You Yet.”
