Renowned pop-rock duo, Babygirl, is back with a brand-new single titled “Easy” that is a soft-spoken take on unrequited love. Inspired by how intensely we want what we can’t have and how hard it is to let go of crushes – especially when they are casually shrugged off by others.  ‘Mr. Nonchalant’ makes it look ‘easy’ to go about his life while the subject feels like a car in a demolition derby. The track is soft and relaxing but channels intense emotions that quickly capture the listener’s ear.

Comprised of two high school best friends, Kirsten “Kiki” Frances and Cameron “Bright” Breithaupt, Babygirl cite Taylor Swift as one of their main inspirations behind their sound. The charismatic pair have expertly crafted a unique and fashion-forward sound and look. While “Easy” is truly a song about the pain of unrequited love, Babygirl told Paper Magazine in a recent interview that it’s a little more nuanced than that – “On some level, maybe you’re having a little bit of fun with it all,” Bright commented. With Kiki adding, “It’s nice to have that feeling about somebody, but ‘Easy’ is about reveling in that feeling while also acknowledging how awkward it is.” That feeling of unrequited love is awkward and painful, but crushes are also fun and exciting, and the song truly captures that and lets both emotions exist simultaneously.

Directed by Dylan Mitro, the infectious music video shows Babygirl designing their own, hot-pink demolition derby car while effortlessly smashing in other car windshields before their own creation is entered into the derby pit. This becomes the perfect way to visualize the painful emotions of unrequited love conveyed in the eloquent lyricism, while also having a little fun with it. The pair comes off as calm, cool and collected as the makeup and design of the video immediately draw you in.

Fans of Clairo and HAIM will love the incredible, understated soft-pop sounds in “Easy” that pair so well with Kiki’s voice. Babygirl has found a unique way of conveying emotions that many of us would struggle to express on our own. Listening to Babygirl is a cathartic, relaxing experience that makes the listener feel like the duo is performing just for them. It’s perfect for those late-night drives where you just want to get out with the windows down and the music blasting.

“Easy” is the follow up single to Babygirl’s hugely successful 2018 EP Lovers Fevers The group has a big year ahead of them with exciting new things coming in 2021.
