Grammy-nominated producer + creator boyband is mammoth in the resurrection of emo-rap mixed with nostalgic hip-hop. From surveying the prospective future of alt-rock and aestheticism, boyband fuses contemporary rap components and western emo stylistics to craft a foolproof concoction of teenage angst and lust. Out now is animated and motley-laced music video for one of the collection’s singles, “birth by sleep.”
“birth by sleep” is an exemplary product of the foolproof concoction. The title constitutes an unknown definition of what the song will be about. The song arrests a shiny production boasted by a fetching lyrical hook, “I don’t want to wake up if you’re not next to me.” Disheartenment and the agony of looming rejection paralyze the melancholy lyricism and bright instrumentation, all impeccable during a windows-down drive through the town.
The audio aspect of “birth by sleep” is joined by a visual component. The graphic depicts boyband’s infatuation with somebody only to be self-sabotaged by an overly alert dependency and wall of fear blocking him from making a move. The flourishing but brief chemistry is then over in a blink of an eye. Produced by More Milieu and directed by Obregon, Sonora-born Ana Peralta-Chong, who has also worked for Oneohtrix Point Never, Korea Town Acid, and independent record labels Dirty Hit and MOTHERWOLF, the video hosts a radiating color scheme to highlight the song’s emotional appeal.
On the video boyband shared, “This song gave me a particular color palette and a delicate energy when I made it, so I wanted the visuals to capture that while subtly telling a story of a relationship start to finish.”
“birth by sleep” accompanies emotionally electrified “by myself” and the newest single, “please don’t waste my time,” featuring label mate No Rome. The trilogy of juxtaposed narratives is all lathered on previously released record never knows best via British independent record label Dirty Hit [4o4, The 1975, beabadoobee].
“by myself” is a mirror image of the apprehension felt in “birth by sleep” brought on by an unexpected ending of a relationship. “please don’t waste my time” is the light in darkness offering the longing of hope.
Splattered throughout never knows best, is as cathartic for both the musician himself and anybody listening. never knows best is the singer + songwriter’s sophomore record full of heavy doses of the happenings of aging. From boisterous pop tendencies, simple instrumentation, to heavyhearted motifs, the second record provides a fresh sonic landscape with even more crisp videos.
