Southern Californian Cola Boyy has released the video for “Kid Born In Space.” The latest collaboration with Andrew VanWynGarden of MGMT, who he toured with back in 2018. The track is deep dive into Cola Boyy’s come-up and how he has grown letting his haters control him.
A few taps of the drum open the walkway for Cola Boyy, who pushes past the fluffiness and gets straight to the worthwhile advice: you don’t have to prove yourself to anyone but you. Guitars that ooze with confidence, bliss and self-love cascade behind Cola Boyy’s softly delivered message, further emphasizing just how good he feels about what he’s saying. He reminisces on his childhood, when he was looked upon as just a boy with a disability and never given a shot to shine like the star he is gradually becoming present-day.
He now acts as a guiding voice for those who are currently facing similar struggles, letting them know it does get better and to not let anyone decide your course of life for you. VanWynGarden begins literally echoing his sentiments, adding another uplifting voice to a situation that should never have to be addressed. The track ends with one last reminder before the guitars fade out, leaving you to sit on Cola Boyy’s words and turn them into action.
The video opens with Cola Boyy, who’s donning a sparkly suit, going into his dressing room and lighting a cigarette while a crowd waiting for him cheers his name. While he inhales the smoke and releases the leftovers, he thinks about all the people who have done him wrong. He’s suddenly found lying on the ground, still smoking, but now singing directly into the camera. He pours himself a drink before closing a set of blinds that hang in front of a poster of him, resembling how he felt being shut out as a child. He goes out to play the guitar and vibe before taking one last rip of his cigarette and looking on, forgetting about anyone who has criticized him.
Of the track, Cola Boyy shares: “When I was a kid I was convinced that no one could understand what I was going through and feeling, I was embittered and angry. The song is me explaining to my younger self to let go of worries about people staring or not understanding. Everyone has their struggles, and problems that shape them.”
“Kid Born In Space” is set to be the first song release through MGMT‘s new label, MGMT Records. It’s the follow-up to Cola Boyy’s cover of Jeb Loy Nichols’ “To Be Rich Should Be A Crime,” which dropped in February. While you should listen to both songs because of Cola Boyy’s raw talent, if you choose not to, he has proven that nothing bothers him anymore.
