WATCH: Dance Gavin Dance Unveil Official Music Video For “Strawberry’s Wake”

The loosely serious vibe of the video fittingly matches the tone of the track

Post-hardcore band Dance Gavin Dance dropped their official music video for “Strawberry’s Wake” — the second single from their highly-anticipated ninth studio album, Afterburner. The feel-good track, despite the grim title, is a wholesome post-hardcore-funk-pop tune that gives off the positive message of “I want you, to matter to you.” The vibe of the track is a sort of celebration, to not stress and to work on oneself despite the feeling of wanting to be perfect. This liberating song bleeds into the upbeat, catchy nature of the tune. This cheerful song is good vibes all around and is made to make listeners feel happy.

The upright, reverb-heavy intro starts out in a somber mood, much like most of DGD’s songs. The way the song heightens into being a delightful, summertime-like anthem comes as a surprise during the first listen, but is very welcoming. “Strawberry’s Wake” contains plenty of foot-tapping drum work and delectable basslines. Tilian Pearson sends it with his spicy vocals, lively guitar tapping, and fizzy licks, jazzy-as-heck funk, and Jon Mess’s nearly overly joyful screams. The frisky, thrilling ways that this song spins as it plummets toward an addictingly animated outro is done in such a way that bands like DGD can provide.

The video for “Strawberry’s Wake” by Dance Gavin Dance starts off with the band on a Swan Air flight. The melody is soft and light mimicking the beautiful sky outside of the plane. All at once, the music picks up. The loosely serious vibe of the flight shows the pilots smoking cigarettes, the flight attendant causing obnoxious scenes of safety precautions, and an entire musical set being performed on the plane. Drugs and alcohol are scattered throughout the video, adding to the free-spirited vibe of the song and video. The song continues to switch back and forth between the lyrical ballad and upbeat screaming of the chorus. It is a performance that you do not want to miss.

Afterburner will be available via Rise Records on April 24.
