Atlanta-based rock group glimmers have shared their new intimate single, “By The Lips,” with an accompanying video. The track — off their upcoming EP, Worlds Apart, due out April 23 via Common Ground Collective — is a ballad that everyone can only dream of their crush serenading them with.
The track opens with guitar strums that resemble the feeling of fresh air at the end of a long week. Frontwoman Maggie Schneider starts gifting her significant other with compliment after compliment, revealing she finds a sense of comfort in each of their crevices. While she tells them how she longs to stay in their embrace, Schneider also reveals her fear that they don’t believe a single word coming out of her mouth. In the bridge, the kick drum hammers home the genuineness, as vocalist Alex Norrell almost attempts to yell his mutual feelings overtop of her. The track ends with those same fears and fades out with a light tap of some keys and a desolate guitar strum, providing no perspective from the other side — something that will hopefully be answered within the band’s next track.
The video opens the way the band’s last single, “Purple Tux,” closed: with the boy, Jacob Adkins, at the door, ready to make amends and start anew with Schneider. As he lies on the couch and stares up at her, it’s like they never even broke up, as Schneider looks straight into eyes and spews out compliments that usually emerge from couples who have just reunited. The scene constantly shifts from them on the couch with pink lights beaming or lying on the ground with a dim blue cascading down their lovestruck faces. Adkins never says anything back, just looks on with admiration. Finally, they start baking cupcakes and actually burn them, but they’re so smitten they don’t care about it so much. They play video games, and Schneider does a silly dance after winning. They return to the kitchen, where Adkins draws a heart in brown frosting on the cupcake. They do the dishes together and playfully fight in the living room before Schneider sits him down on her bed and fully divulges her feeling. The track ends with no response from Adkins — but given what we just saw from him, he’s most likely going to answer with the same sentiment.
Of the single, the band shares: “’By The Lips’ is our fourth episode of this story. At this point, our couple has reunited for the first time since their breakup. The song is about those intense feelings you feel for somebody, especially right after the relationship has ended. As the song builds, the couple becomes more intimate, but there’s still some uncertainty of whether it’ll work out.”
The video is the latest chapter in glimmers’ concept series. The band officially came to be in 2020, a year after they started playing together. The band’s debut EP, Cluttered Heart, introduced us to the brilliance, and Worlds Apart will only keep that intact.
