Norwegian artist/producer Jon Olav dropped a new song with an accompanying music video on March 17 called “Stupid.” “I fell in love with a particular sample from an old cassette machine. I don’t think we ever found out what it was, but it was amazing. From there the song made itself in a way,” Olav explained about the track. A deep bassline brings the track to life when paired with Olav’s high-reaching falsetto. “Stupid” is a track made to express self-confession.
“In a way, this song is about the process of confessing to oneself that you’re a bit of a coward in some situations, and maybe specifically when it comes to relationships,” Jon explains. “It’s not exactly a happy song. But not that sad either really. I guess it’s also about realizing that you have some unrealistic expectations when it comes to relationships and the frustration that comes with it.“
The grainy, uncanny intro is soul-stirring and chilling yet Olav’s vocals are delightful and lovely. The steady groove of the bass and drums really tie the production together, perfectly. This track ideally conveys the feelings that Olav has experienced and applied to his art. The official music video for Jon Olav’s “Stupid” begins with a distressed-looking Olav on the floor in his home. The rest of the video is of him in the room experiencing different emotions and matches the mood of the song as the music continues. In the last minute of the video, Olav is seen covered in a blanket – Halloween ghost costume-style – where he seems to be lashing out at his feelings. The moment where he is calm is when the room is lit with red.
Jon Olav’s music has a deep understanding of sparsity. He combines elements of alternative pop and electronic sounds all put together with fascinating production. Olav is perfect for fans of brenn. and Virkelig.
