As we take bold strides into the new year, perhaps wary of the looming uncertainty of 2022, LA-based pop darling Kit Major is waving to us from the other side of the void — all we need to do is take a leap of faith and let her music guide us. With the release of the video for her new single, “Solo Disco,” she gives us an immersive look into her technicolor world. From the start of the video, we’re instantly flooded with neon lights. Pop beats fading in. A sensory experience equivalent to jumping into a pool of glitter. Immediately, we’re transfixed. Kit appears onscreen in a studded leather ensemble reminiscent of Lady Gaga’s seminal Born This Way era – but making it her own as she launches into dance moves that’ll inspire you to follow suit and join her.

“I was trying way too hard when you only kept me in the dark/Open your mind and open your heart/Love is a dance, it shouldn’t be this hard/I hope someone else can dance to the rhythm of your broken heart.”

“Solo Disco” is a declaration of oneself — denouncing the need for partnership or hollow nights of parties and meaningless hookups. We’re encouraged to not only be content with, but in search of, moments of personal connection with ourselves. In Western culture, seldom are we given the opportunity to be comfortable with the idea of being alone. Even more rare is the presence of some form of media — be it a song, movie, tv show, etc. — that celebrates it. It’s something we don’t think we need permission for — but when we receive it, it’s unbelievably liberating.

Kit shares, “This song is for the lonely, the independent bitches and those learning to find comfortability in feeling uncomfortable. ‘Solo Disco’ is where you go when you have no one else, it’s not just about romantic relationships, but it’s a fuck you, I’m fine to those who don’t believe in you or see your true value.” This sense of empowerment is visible in the confidence and joy with which Kit moves through each frame. Completely in her own element, she dances with abandon, coming off as equal parts playful and risque. But the thing is, it doesn’t matter how she’s coming off. She’s dancing joyously and solely for herself, ignited by her own volition. So take a page from her book, and go throw yourself a solo disco.
