EDM group Krewella and Dutch DJ duo Yellow Claw have finally dropped their colorful new video for “Rewind”. “Rewind” was previously set to drop in June but was pushed back a few weeks out of respect for the ongoing outcry for social justice. “WE ARE MUTED – in support of the #Amplifymelanatedvoices movement, we will not share original content from June 1-7. Instead, we will be sharing content from black voices in our stories and twitter feed. Marginalized voices must be at the center of these discussions. We’d like to call on our fellow non-black peers in the electronic space to join us in this effort. Consider muting yourself in solidarity” – read the June 1 Facebook post.
Just over a month later and Krewella are continuing to voice and show their support for Black Lives Matter and the fight against police brutality and social injustice – but the duo also realized that we all need some color in these dark times of fighting. “Hello dear #GlobalKrew ! As promised, our postponed collaboration ‘Rewind’ with Yellow Claw comes out this Friday [7/10]. We absolutely love what we created together, but delayed the debut because we didn’t think it was appropriate to self-promote in the wake of our country’s awakening to the screams, chants, and cries for long-overdue justice & equality of our fellow Black/BIPOC. So here we are dropping the tune – but let us make it very clear that this moral “awakening” in the U.S. is still in its infancy, and unfortunately, still is being rejected, capitalized on, manipulated, and ignored by many. The movement needs every bit of effort to continue energizing, uplifting, and listening to those who have been oppressed, so it doesn’t dwindle down into a half-hearted, failed attempt at correcting our toxic culture. There are many streams that feed the river of heightened consciousness. We hope that sharing this song can be a source of magical joy for you, as this is often what brings us into our hearts, and allows us to be more gentle, compassionate, and kinder – not only with ourselves, but with living beings among us. Krew, wherever you are in the world, faced with whatever challenges you experience in your respective communities and countries, please keep opening your mind and hearts as we take strides together towards humanity. Much love & peace to all of you ❤ jahan and yasmine”
Through trippy animation and neon scenes, Krewella and Yellow Claw take fans on a journey through nostalgia. Driving through a storm and dodging bolts of lightning sings, “Is it just me, or do you ever feel that time just flies? Is it just me, or do you ever feel the years go by?” Through a simultaneously melancholy yet uplifting tempo, listeners can lose themselves in the memories as they listen to the beat.
Krewella is candid in the meaning of the song, explaining in an Instagram post, “we wrote “Rewind” about the bittersweet feeling of losing yourself in memories… i know yall know what i’m talking about 😅 when suddenly it’s a month, a year, sometimes a decade later and you feel like everything you’ve experienced is someone else’s fictional story. this song is about the “you” from the past that’s a familiar stranger, and it’s sad that it’s gone but you’re happy you felt so deeply about something, ANYTHING in your life. they say nostalgia is like a drug, & this song is about letting yourself slip into it knowingly & enjoy it with reckless abandon.”
Krewella is a household name in the EDM world, dominating the charts with hits like “Alive”, “Alibi”, “No Regrets”, and “Live for the Night”. Made up of sisters Jahan and Yasmine Yousaf, Krewella is breaking down barriers in a male-dominated genre. Most recently they’ve started their own label, Mixed Kids Records – where they released their first album in seven years, zer0, in January of this year. Zer0 follows their 2013 album, Get Wet, which debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200. Krewella has performed at almost every major dance music festival in the world.
While Krewella is a household name, the lesser name [yet still wildly popular], Yellow Claw, is made up of Amsterdam-based duo Jim Aasgier and Nizzle – who mix a wide range of genres throughout their discography. Often taking elements from trap, hip hop, dubstep, big room house, hardstyle, and moombahton – the duo experiments to produce a new and innovative sound. Krewella and Yellow Claw had previously collaborated on New World in 2017, so coming back together to create a new nostalgic track almost seemed like a no-brainer for these groups.
“Rewind” is Krewella‘s latest track following “Goddess” – a collaboration with Nervo and Raja Kumari, and an acoustic, stripped version of “Greenlights” which both came out in May. Unfortunately due to the virus, Krewella had to cancel their upcoming Zer0 Tour. Yet despite everything, throughout quarantine Krewella has been putting out new remixes, interacting with fans, and performing during virtual livestream sets on Twitch, YouTube, and Instagram, as well as in Sirius XM‘s DisDance Music Festival to raise money for MusiCares, and Room Service Music Festival presented by Trap Nation and Chill Nation.
