Canadian musician and creative Mylo Quinn [Quinn McGraw] is no stranger to getting his hands dirty. You may recognize him from one of his many projects including, progressive metal stalwarts Living Machines, comic book publishing house Splice Comics, or hardcore outfit UGLY. Now, the artist has shared his latest single, “Down,” featuring GLMR & Black Veil Brides guitarist, Lonny Eagleton. GLMR is an up and coming alt-pop singer in Canada, while Lonny Eagleton is the guitarist and newest member of the hard rock band, Black Veil Brides. The track touches on the emotions of desperation, frustration, and despair that we have all experienced during the past several months. The stripped-down project is anything but lacking – saturated in emotion and intensity to create a captivating and engaging sound.
In the trippy music video, shot by Teaghan McGinnis, they sing and play against the scape of the city lights. Quinn, GLMR, and Eagleton perform with their hearts on their sleeves, expressing feelings of emptiness, yearning, and ultimately triumph. On top of GLMR’s soaring toppling and Lonny’s killer guitar playing, the lyrics get emotional, “Can you feel my heartbeat / Underneath the skin it’s bleeding / My pages are empty, I’m glued to my phone / Left all the lights on but nobody’s home / Weighed down, feeling like I might just / Break down, somebody give me a way out I’m feeling weighed down.”
“For me, writing music is about expression above all else, I’m not drawn to it when I’m feeling happy,” explains Mylo. “In that sense, as a muse, I tend to write the most when I’m feeling a bit blue.”
“Down” is Mylo’s first original track, following his popular cover of Jessie Reyez’s “Figures”. With elements of emo, trap, r&b, SoundCloud hip-hop, and progressive alternative music, he creates a unique yet familiar soundscape that’s easy to fall into.
Mylo Quinn is a man of many talents – heavy metal musician, sci-fi author, and much more, he’s no stranger to getting creative. In straying from his progressive heavy metal style in his band Living Machines, Mylo veers towards a more melancholy and emotional soundscape. By tapping into personal experiences and exposing his emotions through music, he delivers necessary vulnerability. It shows a more mature approach to his artistry, making him one of the more exciting of the new crop of “emo” tinged performers. He has plans for more music and collabs throughout the rest of the year and in 2021.
