Upstate New York based duo, Nocturnal Houses, has broken onto the scene with the release of their first single “Going Home With Him.” The track is an incredibly danceable pop bop with a hook that you’ll never get out of your head. Fans of Michigander, beabadoobee, and Evangelia will instantly love the track’s soul and infectious emotion.
“Going Home With Him” grapples with a difficult love triangle where the singer constantly battles with the knowledge that her best friend is going home with the man she loves. “I know that you’re going home with him tonight/the way you hold his hand it kills me every time/And I’ve been dreaming hoping that you’d change your mind but I know that you’re going home with him tonight,” Maddy Mazzotta, one-half of Nocturnal Houses, sings.
Maddy expresses a great deal of hurt and torment throughout the track, being forced to reconcile with losing both her friend and her lover. Her gorgeous vocals are filtered to sound constantly shifting, coming in and out of focus without stable footing much like the singer herself throughout the song. The bassline and chorus are where the song truly breaks free, unleashing all the pent up frustration of the verses into a soaring chorus.
The video for “Going Home With Him” finds Maddy catching her lover with her friend across town, at a café and playing guitar on a doorstep. Directed by Logan Rando, she sings earnestly to the camera, understandably expressing feelings of dejection and confusion at her predicament. But by the end of the video, we come to a dramatic reveal exposing that the person she has been seeing around town was actually her all along as she removes her blond wig and glasses. This campy twist brings new meaning to the song, and makes “Going Home With Him” even more introspective.
