New York City musical troupe The Booklights embody a defined beam of light that doesn’t have the capability to dim. Composed of lead singer, guitarist, mandolinist, and ex-member of The Hollows, Rob Morrison, cellist Lauren Molina, fiddle player Rachel Green, and percussionist Benny Elledge, the quartette coined their name in 2014 and swimmingly crafted a sound like no other.
“My Woman, the Almanac” — inspired by the likes of The Band and Fleetwood Mac — is the forthcoming EP’s Into A Ball‘s introductory piece for the world. The song launches with a westward fretwork dichotomized with a conventional twangy aria. Morrison’s vocal stylistics greet the folksy, Appalachian atmosphere as the rest of the band continues to play on. Coupled with the release of “My Woman, the Almanac’s” audio component came the music video. The visual sees vocalist Morrison set his footing throughout a bare, rustic home as he wanders from room to room. Molina, Green, and Elledge join in the living room to play away the little things in life we can’t control.
Founder and lead singer Rob Morrison shared, “’My Woman, the Almanac’ is a love song about letting go of the many things we can’t control in life, and instead, investing that energy in your partner. The lyrics frame this idea through a farmer who longs to work his land but is cooped up inside during the winter, and learns to simply be grateful for the time with his loved one. Though written before quarantine, this song certainly took on a new meaning for us in 2020. We were fortunate enough to be joined by the wonderful Jay Julio on viola for this song.”
On August 6th, the Gillian Welch-inspired quartet is releasing their newest EP Into a Ball produced, mixed, and mastered by James Frazee [Sharon Van Etten, Patti Smith, Esperanza Spaulding.] Written throughout 2020’s quarantine, like many of 2021’s and 2022’s releases, the anticipated EP is brimmed with a pioneering sound concocted with cutting-edge Americana and towering feminine harmonies. Morrison continued to share, “Into a Ball is a collection of songs that pull from the sounds and genres that we in the Booklights love: Americana, backwoods folk and roots, a quick dip into 1930s-style novelty music, and finally, dark psychedelia. Recorded remotely in 2020 during the lockdown, the EP is made up of songs that journey through seasonal changes and cycles, traditional and futuristic textures, all rolled into a ball.”
“My Woman, the Almanac” follows the band’s debut single “Waywiser” soaked in thunderous melody and a ponderous sonic landscape which is the opening track on Into a Ball. From The Booklights’ serpentine offerings stapled throughout their debut single to their impending debut collection, there’s one thing to be sure of and that is that The Booklights are in a league of their own.
