British multi-instrumentalist Oscar Lang has just unveiled the video for “21st Century Hobby,” the newest single off his upcoming debut album Chew the Scenery. On “21st Century Hobby” Lang merges psychedelic rock with commentary on modern society and our collective obsession with social media. This entire realization comes wrapped in a rock song that grooves as much as it bites.

The song begins with a swirling guitar intro in the vein of Pink Floyd, but then kicks into high gear after a brief drum fill. Lang’s reverb laden vocal makes him sound distant — coming to us from beyond the screen. Lang’s lyrics are pointed at internet culture and the way we become obsessed with how others perceive us. How loud do you shout/To drown others out? /It’s all for a show/ Do they know what’s below?” The imagery of the video drives this home. The dream-like collage of snippets from Lang’s feed, reflected in his glasses, punctuates his point. People project a version of themselves that is detached from reality to boost their ego, or to not feel lonely. Lang reminds us in “21st Century Hobby” not to sacrifice our individuality for internet popularity.

The contrasting textures of heavy distortion and reverb add to the song’s otherworldliness, which is anchored by a steady beat and melodic bass. The guitars drop away at one point to allow Lang’s vocals to take the spotlight, each line of the chorus emphasized by a flourish of snare drum. Lang’s fretwork is more subdued than most guitarists. He’s more finesse than flash but knows when to lean into a lick or solo, providing variety to the song. There are equal parts fuzzed out leads and atmospheric effects. They don’t dominate the track and are used sparingly when needed.

The most surprising aspect of the video is Lang’s ability to balance commentary and good songwriting. The message is not overbearing or preachy. Where lesser musicians might stumble over the song to make a point, Lang keeps everything moving at a brisk pace that is equal parts thought-provoking and foot-tapping. The eye-catching visuals and infectious melody fit together seamlessly, thanks to clever editing and a great concept. The piece serves its purpose and then some. Oscar Lang is someone to watch, and who’s future releases will no doubt turn heads.
