WATCH: OTR & Au/Ra Put Out a Stripped Version of “BROKEN”

OTR Au/Ra Broken stripped music video review

This past Thursday, OTR & Au/Ra’s put out a reimagined version of their single, “Broken,”  along with a brand new music video. The stripped track features orchestration by OTR and new vocals from Au/Ra, with emotionally driven lyrics. From the minds of Blake Lake [director], Joe Mortimer [Creative Director], and John Smith [Visual Affects], the black and white visuals take over the screen, embodying the intensity of Au/Ra’s word. Shot in isolation in both Atlanta (where OTR is based) and Antigua (the Caribbean island where Au/Ra lives), the simplicity brings forth such an elegance to a song with deep-rooted emotions.

Originally set to a foot-tapping beat, “Broken”  debuted at #1 Most Added on NACC Electronic radio in the U.S, and then went on to become a top 10 hit. The track is from OTR’s debut album, Lost At Midnight (Astralwerks), which was released in April and has already seen much success gaining 50 million combined global streams. Conscious Electronic noted, “[‘Broken’] captures the emotional seesaw of wanting to be open to love yet fearing heartbreak, something we’ve all grappled with at some point.”

Speaking on the meaning of the track, he shares, “I wanted to let the meaning of ‘Broken’ shine through by creating a stronger sense of tension. It was a lot of fun searching for ways to capture it musically, and in the end, I think Au/Ra and I did a great job taking this track to a new place.”  EDM.com gushed over OTR saying, OTR has established himself as one to watch in this creative space…the only direction for this emerging talent to go is up.”  Magnetic Magazine observed, “[Lost at Midnight] has a space-age feel like getting lost in a bright, star-filled sky.”

OTR is the stage name of Ohio native Ryan Chadwick, a 28-year old aerospace engineer-turned-producer. When he was 22 studying aerospace engineering in grad school, he had an internship in the Japanese town of Kurashiki. At the time, he was living alone and was dealing with the language barrier, bought a MIDI keyboard, and started creating his own compositions, using the little knowledge he had from playing on a dusty old piano back in his college dorm. After coming home in 2015, he released a series of singles that would go on to get him a deal with Astralwerks.  Now, he is based in Atlanta, and “hopes that listeners end up projecting their own experience onto what (he) regards as a nostalgia-inducing album.” | Au/Ra, who’s real name is Jamie Lou Stenzel, is an Antiguan-German singer-songwriter. Born in Ibiza, she speaks Catalan, German, and English. She’s known for her electro-pop and alt-pop sound, and songs that explore the dark nature of humanity with huge pop hooks. She rose in popularity in 2018 when her breakout hit “Panic Room” was remixed by Camelphat and gathered 40 million streams.
