Indie trio Princess Goes To The Butterfly Museum has released the debut single, “Eat An Eraser,” off of their upcoming studio album, Thanks For Coming. The genre-blending track centers around the idea of an eraser that can wipe memories and anxieties to escape knowledge of an impending apocalypse. The group is composed of Michael C. Hall, who is most known for his appearances on Dexter and Hedwig and the Angry Inch as lead vocalist and lyricist, Pete Yanowitz on drums who you may know from The Wallflowers and Morningwood, and Matt Katz-Bohen of Blondie on the keyboard.
Existential fears of massive changes to our planet like climate change or warfare can often be overwhelming, but the track deals with the fear brought on by these concerns in a nuanced way. “Eat An Eraser” proposes a way to erase memories in order to help cope with those frustrations. On the concept behind the track, Hall commented, “The title comes from a line in the final verse of the song. It’s a cultural invitation to erase awareness of certain existential realities . . . not that that makes them any less real. We hope the song and video resonate, but once we release something, it doesn’t really belong to us anymore. The meaning’s about however any individual listener interacts with it. There are as many takes on the song as there are people who listen. For us, the way the record sounds and what it says is of the moment. We’re citizens of the world, and now is when we made it.” The track is purposely open-ended — encouraging listeners to interpret it based on their own realities.
The video uses state-of-the-art 3D animation technology that captures provocative scenes of butterfly swarms and heads on fire along with trippy, 80s inspired performances from the band. The band’s sound is the love child of David Bowie’s music and style with production on par with the legendary Giorgio Moroder, paired with visuals that perfectly compliment this harmony. Fans of Phantogram, LCD Soundsystem, and Radiohead will love their rock-based roots combined with dialed back synths and moving drum beats.
Their name, Princess Goes To The Butterfly Museum, was inspired by Katz-Bohen’s daughter’s vision for her own imaginary band that the crew decided to make a reality. Each member brings unique talent to their sound and production from their diverse experiences across their careers. All three met on the set of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, so theatricality and powerful skilled performances are well in their wheelhouse.
Princess Goes To The Butterfly Museum’s first album is scheduled to be released on February 12th of next year. Their previously released, self-titled EP was lauded by Paper, the Associated Press, the Alternative Press, and many more. “Eat An Eraser” eloquently captures the provocative messages and stunning performances that will accompany the album.
