Alt-pop group Prinze George have released the video for “Off My Ass,” their first single since the release of their latest EP Happy Gardens. The track takes the group to a darker place both sonically and lyrically through its exploration of loneliness, sudden loss, and the darkest moments of quarantine.
Filmed in black and white, the video never strays from lead singer Naomi Almquist’s face. Viewers follow her through this moment, drinking from a plastic cup and spilling drinks on her shirt, all the aftereffects of a night of drinking. But the party is absent from this scene. Naomi remains alone in a bathtub for the whole video, highlighting the loneliness built into the track. Many found themselves drinking alone during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the video for “Off My Ass” perfectly encapsulates the darkness associated with that headspace.
The lyrics for “Off My Ass” reflect that moment of intoxication when things go from fun to something darker. “Where will the healing come/Your turn, take a hit/I’m a mess and I know it,” Naomi sings. “Off My Ass” challenges the listener to fully embrace one’s emotions and to refrain from judging oneself in their darkest moments.Loss and change are a part of life, and these experiences are important to fully embrace as they are what make us truly human. Prinze George fully understands this concept, and channels it beautifully and emotionally in both the track and its accompanying video.
“‘Off My Ass’ is really the first hug I have ever given myself through my work,” shares Naomi. “I am a deep feeling person and become very angry/explosive when I am hurting. I make mistakes. I don’t know how to lie about how I feel. No matter how awful I’ve been to other people in moments of weakness, I have always been, without a shadow of a doubt, the absolute hardest on myself.”
Prinze George continue to light-up the alt-pop scene with each release bringing a new degree of innovation and sonic clarity. Both their self-titled EP and their debut Illiterate Synth Pop rocketed the group into the hearts of fans. Following a tour with Lewis Del Mar that premiered at major festivals like Austin City Limits, Eaux Claires, and Firefly, the group mastered their nostalgic, synth-laden sound and packaged it perfectly into their 2018 EP Airborne. The group is composed of lead singer Naomi Almquist, Kenny Grimm on production, and Isabelle De Leon on drums. Naomi and Kenny were invited to score Til Schweiger’s film Head Full of Honey which remains one of the highest grossing German films. Their latest EP, Happy Gardens, was a gorgeously reflective, 11-track project that featured breakout hits like “Centuries” and “Tenderly.” “Off My Ass” marks a new direction for the group in their sound, production, and lyrics.
