Allow us to introduce you to your next favorite indie odd-man-out, Ron Gallo. Still relatively new to the music scene, Ron Gallo refuses to be into a tight-knit box, perfectly stashed away until its time to put on a show – he simply just doesn’t believe it’s possible. Last week, he released his latest music video for his single, “Wunday (Crazy After Dark)”. The track joins “You Are Enough” and “HIDE” in his 2020 releases – setting Ron up to be one to watch.
Hailing from the Philly music scene, Ron briefly fronted Toy Soldiers before embarking on a solo career that is forever evolving. Dancing across the alternative genres, Ron’s earlier work pulled more from the rock and garage punk scene – while his latest endeavors seem to be exploring the world of indie crossovers. His original start for this latest project came about during a three month period of self-isolation last summer when immigration forced him back to America from Italy, where he planned to stay with his now-wife, and collaborator, Chiara. After a trip around the world spent mostly living and recording in Italy – Ron came to finish these recordings in the same room they were started during the pandemic self-isolation. Working remotely with Ben H. Allen [Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective] who helped provide additional production and mixing, Ron Gallo has been able to piece together a collection of songs that he says hopes to “[try] to make people happy as the world goes through some major growing pains.”
The video for “Wunday (Crazy After Dark)” features Ron out and about trying to enjoy the simple things in life – from a quick trip to the grocery store to just sitting around, enjoying the surroundings. While alone time is healthy for everyone, just a bit too much and it can send someone into a spiral of crazy. Speaking more in-depth of the track, Ron shares, “It’s an introvert summertime party jam celebrating alone time and isolation, but then after too much solo time starting to go crazy. I think I wanted this song to sound like Will Smith’s outfits in Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, blending the jazz chords with an old-school boom-bap beat. A very simple, sort of stupid, feel good song.” The track itself feels rudimentary of indie cinema. With movies like Juno and Nick And Nora’s Infinite Playlist establishing themselves as cult classics within the genre – “Wunday” feels like the missing piece to their soundtracks.
With the release of “Wunday” also came the announcement of his upcoming LP, PEACEMEAL. The project unleashes a patchwork of collective thoughts and styles to unleash a single entity meant to provide a deeper insight into who Ron Gallo is and what lurks in his mind. After constantly being on the go – Ron felt himself beginning to burn out. Purposefully taking a step back from the mayhem for a chance to catch his breath, Ron began to naturally unravel life’s stresses to produce a colorful assortment of pop, jazz, 90’s hip-hop, lo-fi/hi-fi sounds that made the artist feel joy in his music for the first time. PEACEMEAL aims to deliver a nearly complete story of Ron Gallo – a chapter within his autobiography if you will. The LP aims to touch on the vast range of emotions you feel for yourself and those around you. With a release date of October 9, 2020 – to say we are stoked for what’s to come is a bit of an understatement.
Lose yourself and your mind in “Wunday (Crazy After Dark)”.
