WATCH: Rosie Carney Releases New Single ‘when i look at you’

Rosie Carney when i look at you

Irish folk musician Rosie Carney just released the first single “when i look at you” off her forthcoming EP i dreamed i was the night, which is due out April 10, via Color Study. Along with the single, Carney offers an official music video to show her vision for the song.

Carney said that she sees images as she writes her music, and these synesthesia experiences heavily contributed to the song’s visualizations, helping the singer-songwriter to see that she had to break through her comfort zone. As a result, she put herself in front of the camera, the outcome being darker and more striking than we’ve ever witnessed Carney being. “I knew as I wrote this song that I would be in the video, something I’ve never done before. I knew I wanted to move my body [again something I’ve never done before] but I knew I had to do it in a way that would tell the story of the pain and fear I’ve been through both physically and mentally over the past 10 years,” Carney shared.

The song’s themes are “heartbreak, betrayal, and destruction. All of which I have inflicted on myself for as long as I can remember,” stated Rosie Carney about “when i look at you.” “I never felt comfortable being in front of the camera, it’s like I wrapped myself in chains, and I knew in order to really tell this story I had to break myself free from them.

The video carries a lament for the environment, as Carney takes on a Mother Earth element while under weeping tree blooms – human pain imitating environmental pain. Her iron-front, thunderstorm, and red tints make the video as intimidating as she envisioned it to be. The song features a soft guitar and heart-breaking lyrics as Carney and a male dancer do an interpretive dance together as the wind blows Carney’s hair around. The imagery, combined with Carney’s ethereal voice, creates a mesmerizing experience that you do not want to miss.
