Surf Mesa and Madison Beer have finally released the video for their smash hit “Carried Away.” The video is just as dreamlike as the feelings the song evokes, going through the journey of a budding relationship and only feeling good vibes while doing so.
The track opens with a brief crackle before Beer jumps into it, smoothly revealing to her newfound partner how she’s never realized something could feel so right. A simple acoustic guitar, per Surf Mesa, backs her up and becomes gradually louder as drums join in the mix. Beer compliments her boo’s appearance before intricate keys appear and the drums are heavily emphasized. At the chorus, Beer hits her falsetto, accentuate how her love can help her do basically anything effortlessly yet perfectly. The bridge feels like drifting off to a deep sleep after a long day, with atmospheric synths fluttering all around while Beer sweetly reminds her love of the overwhelming feelings she has for them — and, though not revealed explicitly, how she never wants them to go away.
The crackling synths, which take the shape of rewinding to an old video, make way for the emergence of Beer, who’s lying on an aqua bed and staring directly into the camera almost as if she’s filming a love song for her partner. The camera then shifts to Surf Mesa at his place, peacefully strumming his guitar while the sun shines on him, most likely writing Beer a love song back. The scene continuously moves from Beer — who is spotted with a lunchtime picnic in her backyard and expressing her deep love at an empty skate park — to Surf Mesa, who is sitting on his roof coming up with the perfect words to say and working away at crafting the greatest love song ever on the piano. Some scenes even include the pair together, sharing their final products, or dancing in a dimly lit room swooning over each other. The dreamy bridge shows the couple literally with their head in the clouds, not worried about any future pitfalls — just reveling in the moment.
Since coming out a month ago, “Carried Away” has accumulated over 10 million streams worldwide. The two are used to the acclaim, though. Surf Mesa‘s “ily (i love you baby)” featuring Emilee, which is certified platinum, and “Somewhere” featuring Gus Dapperton have been played continuously since their respective release dates. Beer’s “Selfish” is gold certified, and her debut album, Life Support, is already one of the best of the year. “Carried Away” is simply another reminder of how talented the two are and why they deserve all the attention they’ve received.
