Irish, indie rockers The Academic have shared the lyric video for their track, “Them”. “Them” plays as a slow burn with a soothing, melancholy ballad – reflecting on past memories and mistakes, their vocals shine through the most on this track. Romantic and sentimental, the scorching riffs and intoxicating melody perfectly frame the emotional lyrics.
“I wrote it about my younger sister, who’s going through a lot of the house-parties-with-friends thing which I’m kind of out of now,” vocalist Craig Fitzgerald explained.
The track comes straight from the band’s acclaimed EP, Acting My Age, released via Capitol Records earlier this summer. The EP also featured other hit tracks, such as the band’s debut single “Anything Could Happen”, a true indie-pop track with hopeful lyrics, and the title track, “Acting My Age”, with a sound reminiscent of bands like Blink-182 and The Strokes, in its lyrics, “I never thought I’d tell myself it’s time to start acting my age / I know I’ve done some silly things I’ve made a few mistakes on the way.” ”
“Unspoken” follows with an electronic element and some softer guitar, a track about those unspoken moments when you first start to fall for someone, and the lively and dynamic “Sunroof” singing, “Screaming from the sunroof, pretending I don’t know you, tell me that it’s all cool, I don’t wanna slow you down.” “Happy Hour” offers vibrant guitar riff and gives off the vibes of a night on the coast of California where the possibilities are endless – “The night is young and so am I.” The six-track project marks a turning point in their career as they expand beyond their home country.
Hailing from near Mullingar in the Irish midlands, the band has been playing together since school, which helped them develop and connect to create a perfect dynamic. After making waves with a number one album and sold-out shows around the UK (and even being hand-selected by Mick Jagger to open for The Rolling Stones in Dublin!), they’ve evolved their sound into something in the realm of Phoenix, The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, and Vampire Weekend.
The Academic have been working nonstop, creating and sharing their sharp and easily enjoyable, moorish indie rock songs, while gaining more and more fans with each new track. An artist’s dream come true, the band finds themselves continuing to gain traction, playing some of the UK’s most regarded venues, while only at the very beginning of their career.
