Sibling duo, Anastasia Grace and Max Haunt are the young masterminds behind The Haunt. While still relatively new to the scene, the Southern Florida quartet has toured all around Europe and across the U.S. opening for bands like Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Palaye Royale. With a mission of inclusion and anti-bullying, The Haunt unveils its latest creation with the music video for “Brag About”.
Lined with a message of feeling lost when you’re away from those you love most, Max noted in a recent interview with Alternative Press that the idea for the song came in part while on tour with Palaye Royale, “When we first started touring with Palaye Royale in 2018, there were moments where it felt like we were in a time capsule while everyone’s normal lives were continuing at home…It’s just pretty crazy how much our social existence relies on who we are to the people around us. There’s also this weird reacclimatizing to your surroundings that happens when you get home.”
When it came time to approach the music video, the world was on full lockdown – so with everyone except for Anastasia and Max positioned in different parts of the world, they attempted to create a fitting video that would do justice to the track. When the final piece was created, the 4-piece didn’t feel it fit their overall aesthetic. In an effort to be more authentic to themselves as individuals and musicians, they called upon director, Chris Hill, who has created all of The Haunt’s music videos to date. With a clear understanding of their vibe, Chris helped produce a video filled with just the right amount of chaos that these young musicians exude.
The video opens with an 80’s snuff film vibe – draped in photo negatives, the screen shifts from a performance against a wall of projections of the dessert and explosions to members invading the camera space under the veil of night vision. The indie-pop track induces involuntary body movement – from a simple head sway to the complete loss in control of your arms, “Brag About” becomes the missing summer track that will transition nicely into fall.
While The Haunt is made up of young musicians who still have much to experience in life — they’ve created a song that resonates not only with their younger fans, but new listeners from generations that have come before them. Distance and time are a fickle thing and sometimes we rely too heavily upon them to make our decisions — “Brag About” expands on those feelings and articulates a wonderment we’ve all felt at one time or another. Despite their age, The Haunt should not be looked over as they radiate talent to that of music icons like L.P. and Amy Winehouse. When the world opens back up, don’t miss The Haunt the next time they come to town — something tells us they’ll be around for awhile.
