Earlier this month we introduced you to the Australian pop-punk band, Yours Truly, who have just released the music video for their latest single, “Together”. Previously, we dove into the track and the meaning behind the name and ultimately their upcoming record, Self Care. Today we finally get to experience the visual that’s been locked inside the minds of these young bucks.
The Mortal Kombat-inspired project features each band member reimagined as a video game character who battles various monsters head to head. After nearly 4 minutes of each player taking on their own mystical creature that rules their mind, they all emerge victoriously. With “Trouble” taking on the themes of the imposter syndrome, its words radiate the polarizing effects of never feeling like you accomplished much and what does get done isn’t quite good enough.
Self Care divulges Yours Truly’s true feelings about their quick rise to success within the scene – the excitement and fear that young musicians learn to manage as they grow within a cutthroat industry. The band found themselves tackling incessant international touring and mounting self-doubt. Alongside all the usual challenges faced as young adults; college, retail jobs, and breakups – and though the process of writing their debut album would prove daunting, it became the perfect antidote to the whirlwind they were living.
With her strong vocals, Mikaila Delgato breaks the genre norms as the band’s front-woman. Speaking about the album, Delgado said, “There was this almost electric feeling of excitement about getting to sit down and write our first record but also a huge feeling of anxiety at the same time. We didn’t want to release something and have people say that we’re actually not that good and weren’t worthy of all the success we were getting… it was like we all had imposter syndrome.” She continues, “The experience was a true form of self-care that ended with me feeling stronger, smarter, enlightened and positive after a rollercoaster of emotions… For me, this album was my version of soaking in vanilla candles and that comforting taste of chocolate and red wine under blankets. We hope it brings solace to whoever listens to it and can relate too.”
Yours Truly has created a prominent spot for themselves amongst the pop-punk scene and has already become one of Australia’s most exciting rising stars. After seeing almost immediate success in their EP Afterglow – which has garnered over 9 million streams since its 2019 release – Yours Truly dove headfirst into making waves within this industry. Though their age may seem like a crutch to some, to those who back this incredible young band, know that what they’ll experience in [and out] of the music world will just provide better material for future work.
