New Zealand pop group Doprah have released a video for their single “Stranger People”. The Neon Gold artist’s video cleverly plays with the theme of vanity and self-image on this three and a half minute “what the fuck did I just watch?” journey.
“Stranger People” takes place in a fantastical doll-house that is made possible by the songs eerie yet catchy musical motif. If you look carefully, you’ll notice there’s some chatter on the youtube hater board about the misrepresentation of J-pop style. In my humble opinion I think the J-pop serves as a targeted aesthetic not a narrative for the story. With that said, cultural appropriation becomes a noted advisory to the video linked below. However, I’m curious to see how the general media interprets the actual narrative of this track.
