Up-and-coming alternative rock trio Wild Truth have released their five-track EP, Drift, just a month after signing to Open Your Ears Records. Frontman Nick Gargiulo’s crisp vocals are a seamless mix of Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump and Panic! At The Disco’s Brendon Urie while the guitar-driven melodies are distinct and will inevitably propel the band to unadulterated acclaim.
The opener, “Pressure,” finds Gargiulo going through the motions, something he feels right in his soul, but he pledges to himself to do everything he can to conceal it. A demanding bass line from Will Beasley and Gargiulo’s exuberant guitars dance all around his stress, instilling life and exuberance into the moment to ease him of the strain. The band has somehow made a track about the stresses of everyday life a dance-worthy bop.
Don’t even try to claim the opening lines of “No Filter” aren’t stripped right from one of Stump’s recording sessions. Their vocals literally sound like carbon copies of each other, and that’s nothing but a good thing. The track discerns the toxicity of those who value — or really take part in — relationships when it’s convenient for them. Bouncy guitars that exude the energy of an early Panic! At The Disco record, guide the track to its soft ending and forthcoming accolades.
The title track, “Drift,” is an exposé, as Gargiulo confronts his significant other for clearly hiding something from him. Via Clayton Sargent, drums beautifully crash everywhere throughout the three-and-a-half minutes, and listeners are gifted with a guitar solo that rises like a boiling pot, oozing with immense flavor.
Of the EP and releasing “No Filter” as the lead single, the Virginia-based band shares: “Drift is about reflection and navigating the path to individuality in such a polarizing environment. ‘No Filter’ was the first song we wrote for the EP. It came together really organically and we wanted to have a song that made you want to dance and cry at the same time.”
Wild Truth is Open Your Ears Records’ latest signee, following the likes of House & Home, Flight Club, Guardrail and Sea Of Storms. Wild Truth’s alternative rock sound, however, is unlike any of their fellow signees nor anyone in the game currently. While Drift is only a 16-minute offering, it feels much longer, exploring the entire spectrum of emotions while encapsulating sonic elements that are more than refreshing — they’re revitalizing.
