The latest pop-punk/rock band, Five North, released their second single “Same Old Story” on Saturday, February 15. The almost-breakup song was explained by drummer Scott Eckel as “Just doing the same old shit that breaks down relationships and continuing to do those things. It’s like, I know those things cause problems, and I know I need to fix those problems, but the self-destructive instinct that’s still in there always creeps through.”
“Same Old Story” by Five North features lyrics that are about admitting to being the reason for a breakup. In the chorus, we hear “Same old story, same old end / You know I fucked it up again / I lost you, I lost my head / Same old story, same old end / I’m coming home for the last time.” Posey’s vocals mixed with the soft yet stern rhythmic section bring the song to life in our ears. “Same Old Story” is unapologetically catchy and very punk.
“Same Old Story” comes after the release of Five North’s much anticipated first single “This Mess” 4 months prior. “This Mess” featured a film short as its music video, which was released at the beginning of this month. No word yet on an album, but Five North seems to be taking extra care in how they release their music. Frontman Tyler Posey has mentioned in previous interviews that he doesn’t want his acting career to push him forward through his [music] career – that he “wants to earn it.” This can play a huge factor in the manner in which new music is released. While commendable to not want to ‘fast track’ his music career – Posey has had a strong fan following since his days playing Scott McCall on MTV’s Teen Wolf. It comes as no surprise that fans who follow his acting career are flooding into his music career, but that overflow doesn’t mean fans are just coming for the teen heartthrob. Fans are staying because Five North has a sound worth listening to.
