Mod Sun — a songwriter from Los Angeles whose song “Flames” with Avril Lavinge is currently at the top of alternative radio — has released his next big hit, “Heavy,” — this time featuring blackbear. The track tackles the falling out of a relationship that was destined to fail — but they both make it clear with their blatant emotion that it doesn’t make it any easier.
The track opens with both artists harmonizing and getting to the point rather quickly: whatever it is they’re going through, it’s a lot to take in. Mod Sun then takes listener inside the story, where he finds himself questioning why he should have to take the blame for the end of the relationship when it was a two-sided ordeal. A trickling guitar picks up in the chorus and transforms into a bass-laden journey of realization where Mod Sun discovers he is worth too much to be stuck in this toxic relationship forever. Blackbear comes in to deliver one of the most relatable lyrics ever that hits people in broken relationships particularly hard: “We been social distancing before there was corona.” The track ends with the reminder that the discovered secrets were too much to bear, and Mod Sun is now on his way to healing.
Of the track, Mod Sun shares: “This isn’t a song that ‘features’ blackbear. This is the kind of song that two people come together to make one piece of art. Both of our souls live on this song. I’ve been saving this song for over a year. Worked with an amazing team of people JP Clark, Ryan Daly, and Matt Marino. It was made during a very pivotal point in my life where I was completely rebuilding myself. During that time, blackbear was one of the people that helped me make those changes and without him, I don’t fully know that I would have been able to.”
Mod Sun and blackbear have been friends since they were both kickstarting their careers. They’ve toured and collaborated on other tracks and even have a side project together called Hotel Motel. This collaboration comes after the release of Mod Sun‘s album Internet Killed the Rockstar, which displays his return to pop-punk — the genre where it all began for him. Fans of everyone from 5 Seconds of Summer to Emarosa will love this collaboration between two icons as well as the rest of their respective discographies.
