LISTEN: REACH NYC shares single “Last Surrender”

REACH NYC Last Surrender
Words by: Ysabela De Ocampo

As REACH NYC spends their off-touring time writing music, they share another brand-new song, “Last Surrender” — track, written after the turmoil of personal life events within the band.

The nostalgic emo-tinged track, “Last Surrender” is fitting for the roots of REACH NYC — filled with melodic verses full of riffy guitars and energetic drum beats. It simmers down in the pre-chorus with only bass and guitars, before driving the track straight to its soaring and electrifying chorus. Electronic elements are heard under layers of vocals and guitars throughout the following verse before taking you on the rollercoaster chorus again. “I used see to see stars in my eyes glow, now they’re falling down.” Singer Rene Mata softly delivers before kicking into the final choruses.

“Last Surrender” is all about one’s battle with depression, heartbreak, addiction, and the loss of loved ones. Mata writes from firsthand experiences of loss when Linkin Park front man and friend, Chester Bennington passed in 2017. Mata found himself in a grueling battle with his inner demons, relapsing after 25 years of sobriety. During his recovery he learns, and now shares, that the only way to win that war with oneself is to surrender. The song tackles facing reality and surrendering to the way you feel to be able to reclaim your life.

REACH NYC is a pioneering hard rock band originating in Long Island in 1996. They were active in the young and rich NYC music scene, sharing stages alongside young groups like Papa Roach and System of a Down, and of course playing the Vans Warped Tour. After the release of their self-titled debut, REACH NYC disbanded. Singer Rene Mata continued to be active in the music scene, working in A&R for Columbia Records. Mata has worked with groups and artists like lovelytheband, Dreamers, Albert Hammond, Jr., POD, Bass Drum of Death, Nevrlands, Ocean Park Standoff, Des Rocs, and so many more.

REACH NYC resurfaced with a new song for the first time in 17 years. The last few months have been a creative period for the band. Last fall they shared the fittingly titled new single “Back From the Dead” featuring Papa Roach’s Jacoby Shaddix. And now the band prepares their returning EP Back From the Dead.
