LISTEN: The Spins Long For Simpler Times on “Acid Rain”

Words by: Jack Humphrey

As anticipation mounts for The Spins’ debut album Not If, But When, the independently-minded indie rock group has a bold new taste of the upcoming LP for fans to enjoy. The new single “Acid Rain” is a mid-tempo lament for the world lead singer, Nick Coombs, sees around him. Fraught with frustration at the cyclical corporate rat race that The Spins’ frontman finds himself and others trapped in, Coombs takes a fervent stand against the commercial takeover of the natural world, all while paying tribute to the band’s verdant home in rural New Jersey. Under the guidance of producer Gary Cioni [Grayscale, Hot Mulligan] , the alt rock foursome has turned in a fresh new underground favorite with a totally unique flair.

The sound of “Acid Rain” lets fans in on an eclectic span of rock influences, from late-career Beatles to Tame Impala. With a warm rhythm sound and bright, fuzzy lead guitar tone by guitarist Jimmy Barr, the group brings a contemplative, yet still upbeat dynamic to this tune, drawing direct inspiration from the 2007 Sean Penn film Into the Wild. Indeed, the film’s overarching themes of forsaking the promise of material wealth to fully immerse one’s self in nature captures the longing spirit of this track beautifully. Alongside “Acid Rain’s” wistful desire to be among the mountains and trees apart from the world of men, The Spins take the time to rebuke those who find their joy in the mundanity of the “rat race” that so many accept as normal. If nothing else, the message of this record speaks to the futility of a life devoid of contact with the natural world and the deeply spiritual communion one may share with it. The band aptly commented recently:

“This is a song about longing to escape society’s rat race and enjoy the fundamental things in life that really matter like personal relationships and the beauty of nature.”

Since their formation in 2016, The Spins have been carefully finessing their sound and their style, blooming into an earnest an artful indie/alternative band before the eyes of their growing fanbase. From the release of their first single, the unpolished “Where I’ve Been,” and across a series of independently-released EPs, The Spins are truly entering into a new era this month with the impending arrival of their debut full-length Not If, But When on June 26th. Confessional, direct, and full of pure, pleasing musicality, this is a band realizing their full potential in 2021. The forthcoming record was crafted over a three week period in producer Gary Cioni’s very own Sound Acres Studios in the band’s home state of New Jersey. With the release of such singles as “Lucky Cig,” “Fade Away,” and most recently “Acid Rain,” fans can look forward more high-concept, guitar-centric indie rock from the band when Not If, But When finally drops next Saturday.
