London based trio Years and Years have provided me with such a feeling of euphoria and excitement, the best way to describe it is having this sensation that I haven’t had from a pop song in the longest time. I feel completely so uninhibited and free, that all I want to do is go insane and dance. Simple like that; I don’t care what anyone will think, as long I can dance with pure joy.
Real, from the aforementioned Years and Years, is a catchy and emotionally charged pop number that’s worthy of comparison to Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake. It’s filled to the brim with a four on the floor dance beat, colorful synths and a killer bassline. Not to mention that singer Olly Alexander carries the song with his relaxed crooning and high notes. When he hits those high notes….I mean, damn!
What undeniably moves me about the song is the hope and persistence this young man feels as he pursues the girl he longs for. All the pain he feels, the desires, his hope and optimism can really affect someone who relates. It also helps that as it takes in the form of a Top 40 pop, it’s actually smarter with its emotional depth and honesty.
The video for the song with film actor Ben Winshaw completely going bonkers on the dance floor is especially awesome, as he desperately hopes his callous date will notice his affection. There’s definitely a lot noir inspired pinks, blues, greens and reds; did I forget there is some inspiring dancing as well? Years and Years have churned out one of my favorite and feel-good singles of the year.
