It’s Thursday again, which means we are highlighting what we may have missed before. This week’s Throwback Thursday is about music for charity! We are also looking at songs that have  uplifting messages because there is always more positivity needed during these hard times.

On October 2nd, 2020 in Los Angeles, California, the alternative band Magic Giant strikes again. It has been nearly a year since their hit single “Disaster Party.” On the 2nd, they enthusiastically shared their single “Outta My Head.” Zambricki, the Fiddler and banjo player shares, “This song is about that last ounce of energy before a breakup, you haven’t given up yet. You still have the fire of the love, even though you well know it’s about to be stamped out. “Outta My Head” is the last plea of a bent not broken love, hoping to take it to the next level before it’s gone for good.”
On October 20th, the Magic Giant announced they will be performing a digital festival called “Live for Climate Relief,” benefiting the non-profit charity One Tree Planet. Earlier this year, the band launched the “LIVE FROM QUARANTINE” festival in response to the pandemic. In March, no one knew how long the pandemic was doing to last. They raised over $125K for charity. Edward Norton, Zac Barnett (American Authors), David BlaineNicholas Petricca (Walk The Moon), Woody Harrelson, Lauren Ruth WardJonathan Russel (The Head And The Heart), Jason Mraz, Wesley Schultz (The Lumineers), and more helped Magic Giant raise money for an important cause.

Alt-quintet band Sunsleep released their stunning single “White Tiger” on September 29th, 2020. The band consists of vocalist Devin Barrus, guitarist Miles Croney, guitarist Lance Nerio, bassist Dylan Woods, and drummer Mason Croney. The track “White Tiger” is based on a charity project the band did with Sing Me A Story.

Vocalist Devin Barrus shares, “White Tiger was inspired by a charity project opportunity for a child who was hospitalized terminally ill. The children got to write and illustrate their own booklet and work with a band to write a piece of music to accompany their imaginative ideas within the book. Our candidate illustrated a white tiger in hers that she would see appear in her dreams. In Japanese culture, the White Tiger symbolizes strength, spiritual awakening, and prosperity amidst war and trial. Much like the terminally ill child, the tiger for her was a symbol of strength while her own body was at war with itself and gave her peace. We wanted our visual to accommodate this symbolism while also fitting the aesthetic and color schemes of the cover art. Something majestic and fitting to the sonic overall “vibe” of the song, simplistic yet captivating.”

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s track “WAP” took the internet by storm this summer. It served as inspiration for an impressive TikTok dance trend and a hilarious parody video by Lardi B. Lardi B is no stranger going viral on the internet; her clever musical parodies have landed her that title several times before.

For this track, she hit the studio with rapper, Nychelle, to put together “Wings and Pizza.” The release came paired with a music video packed with 80’s and 90’s nostalgia. Both Lardi B and Nychelle are decked out in typical 80’s fashion, including bright leopard print and a metallic tracksuit. Neon lights fill the background of the video, along with patterns that reference Saved by the Bell. Mr. T’s cereal box and Barbie sneakers make an appearance in the video as well, adding to the nostalgic feel.

Just because the track is a parody doesn’t mean there isn’t some real talent involved. Not only are her lyrics clever, but Lardi B is an amazing rapper. She’s extremely creative and, of course, very funny. Even though she’s known for her humor, she’s still using her platform to promote body positivity. She’s certainly a force to be reckoned with and we can’t wait to see what she’ll come up with next.

The 90’s vibes don’t stop there. Rapper Snow Tha Product dropped her new song “Confleis (No Soy Santa)” and the music video is straight out of the 1990’s. Complete with a bucket hat and a neon background, Snow has given us another one for the books.

This self-made artist is an absolute force and she’s not slowing down anytime soon. This new single is just as hard-hitting and repeat-worthy as her others, pandemic be damned. Since her split from Atlantic Records in 2018, she’s been completely independent. She was releasing music from her house before it was cool, so she hasn’t really had to slow down- and we’re glad she hasn’t.

The bilingual star’s new song is about her hard work and the grind she’s been on to build her career. The beat itself adds to the 90’s feel with a similar vibe to Biggie Smalls. Her impressive rap skills are only enhanced by the ease with which she switches between English and Spanish lyrics. Her talent is magnified by the duality of her lyrics and how well they flow together. Even if you can’t speak Spanish, her tracks are so catchy that you can thoroughly enjoy them regardless. This budding star is right on the brink of hitting it big and we can’t wait until the day she does.
