Hardcore collective Bring Me The Horizon have teamed up with genre bending artist YUNGBLUD for their newest release, “Obey”. In what has become one of the most anticipated singles of 2020, Bring Me The Horizon and YUNGBLUD have been anything but silent about the track’s release. With each artist posting photo teasers of the up coming collaboration, fans began to speculate what the video could possibly be. In one image, both are seen drenched in blood while in an embrace, while another shows the two all-star vocalists as crowned royalty.
Fans were finally met with the incredibly strange yet perfectly on brand video for “Obey” which features YUNBLUD and Bring Me The Horizon battling as gigantic, robotic figures at war among the skyscrapers of a made up city. They dance along to the track as if possessed before launching into battle and ultimately sharing a kiss and walking off into the sunset. It’s certainly one of the most bizarre videos of the year, yet that is totally expected from a YUNGBLUD x Bring Me The Horizon collaboration.
“Obey” premiered today at 1:10pm ET for the first time on BBC 1 radio. Hosted by Annie Mac, she teased the premiere by playing Bring Me The Horizon’s “Parasite Eve” followed by YUNGBLUD’S “Weird!” before talking with both Oli Sykes, the lead singer of Bring Me The Horizon and YUNGBLUD. As the music fades, Annie welcomed the incredible vocalists before diving head first into how this whole thing came about.
Bring Me The Horizon is a U.K. based metal/electronic punk band that have been around for nearly a decade. Their first four albums, Count Your Blessings, Suicide Season, There Is A Hell Believe Me I’ve Seen It. There Is A Heaven Let’s Keep It A Secret, and Sempiternal were staples of the early Tumblr metal and punk scene. Tracks like “Can You Feel My Heart” and “Chelsea Smile” are synonymous with teenage angst for many Gen X teens. The band radically changed their sound with their 2015 LP, That’s The Spirit which featured their two of their biggest hits yet, “Throne” and “Drown.” Following the release of amo featuring tracks with Grimes and Dani Filth, their seventh album Post Human: Survival Horror is set to be released later this year.
YUNGBLUD, the moniker for U.K. native Dominic Harrison quickly blew up on YouTube in 2017 with the release of his first self-titled EP that established him as a pop-punk antihero. Since then, he has released several EPs, singles, and two albums, the most recent in 2020 titled weird! Outside of music, YUNGBLUD is a fashion icon, blurring gender lines with his non-traditional style and LGBTQ+ identity. Along with a dedicated fanbase, YUNGBLUD is certainly one of the most exciting acts working in music today.
