On Thursday, February 20, 2020, American emo band Hot Mulligan announced their latest single “Equip Sunglasses” by releasing the music video. The video appeared on Billboard before being released on all streaming platforms on Friday, February 21. “Equip Sunglasses” was lifted from the band’s forthcoming album you’ll be fine, set to be released March 6th, 2020, via No Sleep Records.

The song has a “cool” feeling, making listeners want to put on their coolest pair of sunglasses and drive with the windows down. Hot Mulligan gave the video for “Equip Sunglasses” a throwback feel to it, hanging around a ‘67 Chevy Camaro in black leather pants, and of course, black sunglasses. The band also showed their free-spirited personalities, finding funny ways to equip sunglasses. The song features Hot Mulligan’s signature alternative emo sound, with lead singer Nathan “Tades“ Sanville’s raspy vocals.

“When we were writing the song, we felt like it had the type of groove that made you want to put on sunglasses, so we just ran with that without over-complicating anything or creating a real storyline,” Freeman told Billboard in a statement. The video was directed by Michael Herrick, who helped the band come up with random ideas. The bizarre and funny video depicts a lighthearted metaphor for the song’s deeper meaning – the anger and paranoia of being in the spotlight.

From Lansing, Michigan, Hot Mulligan’s main intention when creating music is to make songs that people can sing as loud as they want. Their music is an outcry for growth from a generation of forward-thinking Midwesterners who find themselves caught in a rusty loop of a system in desperate need of hope. They use music as an outlet for the personal experiences and growth they have and are still experiencing.
