Lovelytheband is no stranger to lively indie pop/rock bangers – having already dropped “loneliness for love”, “i should be happy”, “waste”, and “idwgtyp” this year, fans have been glowing with excitement. Lovelytheband adds to their single releases with, “buzz cut”, the fifth song from their upcoming album Conversations With Myself About You (a.k.a. CWMAY) due out August 28.
The band translates emotions, anxieties and experiences into thriving, layered, and vibrant indie anthems. “buzz cut” arrives on the heels of their recent single “idwgtyp” (an acronym for “I Don’t Wanna Go To Your Party”) – a track about a broken relationship and trying to make things right, but getting sick of the lack of effort put in by their partner. But this time, lovelytheband gives fans a cute, feeling-of-falling-in-love tune.
Lovelytheband’s “buzz cut” starts with a simple snare-beat and an immediate summary, good-vibe guitar riff. It tells the story of a summer romance, and wanting to shave off his hair but thinking about how his love interest likes his long hair. The chorus, “It’s the summer of the buzz cut/But you like my long hair/Red flags turn to pixie dust/It don’t matter ’cause I don’t care/’Cause I’m falling, I’m falling, I’m falling for you/And I think that you’re falling, you’re falling, for me too/In the summer of the buzz cut/In the summer of the buzz cut, buzz cut/It’s the summer of the buzz cut, buzz” explains it all quite clearly. Cancel all your plans for the day and put this one on repeat!
The video opens with the three bandmates opening a garage door where they pick up their instruments and prepare to perform “buzz cut.” At the 20 second mark, they break into this summer banger where the picture then switches to frontman, Mitchy Collins, driving an off-white Benz down the 101 with model, Oly Malykina, in the passenger seat. As the video progresses, it tells the love story between the two revolving heavily around her love for his luscious locks. While our leading man never gets a full shave from the blonde bombshell, she does get to show off her barber “skills” as others fall victim to an at-home haircut – at least there was no bowl.
It’s no surprise to see lovelytheband released indie bop after indie bop – they continue to give big fans alongside their casual listeners. Releasing tracks that no one knew they needed until they graced the airwaves. As the band has been busy recording, performing, and promoting, they do not seem to be slowing down anytime soon with no exception to quarantine. We love to see it! The debut of Conversations With Myself About You is less than a month away and we’ll surely have our “buzz cut” ready for premiere day.
