Mod Sun has released the acoustic version of “Flames,” a collaboration with his girlfriend, pop-rock icon Avril Lavigne. The track — adorned with sublime strings and a heap of angst — is somehow better than the already perfect original.

Guided by a delicate acoustic guitar, Lavigne kicks off the festivities, sweetly singing — with just a hint of grunge — that she still longs for her ex, even after all this time. Mod Sun — playing Lavigne’s ex in the track — comes barreling in, screaming that he, too, still thinks about her and yearns for her touch again. After the first verse, he settles to his normal tone, revealing he’s become more and more infatuated with her as the days pass, even though they’re not together anymore. Lavigne and Mod Sun join forces in the chorus, bouncing off each other’s contrasting vocals amid a subdued line of strings.

In the second verse, Mod Sun admits his feelings are so strong that he wishes they had never initially been together — because if they had never met, he wouldn’t have to continue to endure this pain. The strings continue to add a gorgeous dash of flair to the angsty atmosphere. The track ends with Lavigne softly trying to manifest Mod Sun — but the question as to whether or not he comes through may never be answered.

Of the track, Mod Sun shares: “I wanted to offer a bright side to the story and I felt like sonically I could paint that landscape through acoustic guitar and a string section. I wanted to make it feel like it was being performed in a giant ballroom in the middle of a bright summer day.”

The acoustic “Flames” comes alongside Mod Sun’s recent announcement of a deluxe edition of his recent album, Internet Killed The Rockstar, due out May 7 via Big Noise. The deluxe version will include a slew of acoustic versions of songs that appeared on the original album as well as new studio releases.

The original version of “Flames” has already surpassed 30 million streams, reach the No. 8 spot on Billboard’s US Rock Digital Song chart and currently sits in the top 25 of Alternative Radio. Mod Sun, however, is rightfully used to the hype. He’s worked alongside the likes of huge names like his pal Blackbear, Machine Gun Kelly, Travis Barker, Nipsey Hussle and more. As he continues to rise even higher in the industry, keep streaming all of his discography — because he deserves every inkling of praise he’s getting.
