Tyler Posey has released his solo debut single, “Shut Up,” which features indie queen phem and Travis Barker of Blink-182. The track is a burst of exhilaration from start to finish, leaving listeners with only one thought: “Where has this been my entire life?”

The opening, alongside luscious runs from phem, sounds like a remixed version of the iconic guitar line from The Front Bottoms‘ emo anthem “Twin Size Mattress.” Posey joins in just seconds later, his smooth vocals bearing resemblance to All Time Low‘s Alex Gaskarth, and cuts to the chase: he feels closed in with no way out due to his alcohol and drug abuse. Once Barker taps his drumsticks, the place turns electric, guitars rising beneath the surface and Posey stretching his vocal cords to generate what is already a pop-punk classic. It settles down sonically just to come back even stronger, and it ends after three minutes — which is simply too short for such a thrilling ride.

Of the single, Posey shares: “From start to finish, this song really did feel like something special. I wrote the verses on a trip in an RV with my dogs and my friend and felt like it was progressing so naturally in a perfect way. I took those bones to John Feldmann and phem and when she went into the vocal booth to record her vocals, I was so stoked. I had been wanting her on a track but was too nervous to ask. It was an emotional session and then finally to get Travis to play drums on it is just literally a dream come true. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.”

The track — which was co-produced by John Feldmann — holds a multitude of similarities to Posey’s band Five North as well as his short stint with PVMNTS. While PVMNTS is a bit heavier than this first taste of Posey’s solo work, Five North is more relaxed, aiming for more acoustic-esque pop-punk. The two combined perfectly encapsulate the vibe of “Shut Up,” since it starts off soft and soon explodes into pop-punk paradise.

Posey has experienced a rollercoaster year, but luckily, he’s found solace through using music as therapy. The former Teen Wolf star, thanks to finding this outlet to channel his pain, is now sober, starting over and feeling great. The content just keeps getting better from Posey, and there’s no doubt he will continue to deservingly rise within the pop-punk sphere.
